tartan coffeehouse was opened on the 11th of July 2005 and is situated on the Perth Road, in the cultural quarter, next to the art college.
Our aim is to provide a café atmosphere in spacious comfortable
surroundings, with gourmet coffee and quality meals & snacks along with a welcoming friendly service.
"Delicious food, comfortable seating, friendly staff.."
Norman Colston - tartan twist
We would like to take this opportunity to say a big 'thank you' to all who have
came through our doors for a coffee and bite to eat - we really appreciate and value your custom.
The name tartan comes from the many lines and colours provided by the freshly prepared food and drinks on our menu.
As well as using as many scottish products as possible, we also have selected dishes from various countries and cultures on offer.
All our coffee & decaf are organic
fairtrade and freshly roasted every week. Our hot chocolate and tea are also fairtrade.
We also have a large selection of loose tea, from Japanese bancha green tea to camomile flower.
The Fairtrade Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee
that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. For a product to display the Fairtrade Mark it must
meet international Fairtrade standards.
Inside the tartan coffeehouse, we have various canvases from the 'tartantwist' collection hanging on the walls. They are part of Norman Colston's impressive series of tartan images, which are a marked departure from his abstract landscapes.
Each canvas is executed in a mixture of bold colours, often overlaid with more subtle shades, reminscent of traditional Scottish weaves
that hint at his art school training in printed and constructed textiles.
Norman was given the opportunity to create these new panels for the opening of the tartan coffeehouse,
and they have been a permanent fixture since then, receiving very positive feedback.
Norman Colston is a graduate in textile design from Duncan of Jordanstone
College of Art, former director of Dundee Printmakers Workshop and is currently Arts Manager at McManus Galleries and Museum, Dundee.
There is always something going on in tartan coffeehouse - we have held a palestinian breakfast, a fairtrade breakfast,
a burns supper, wine tasting, and recently the launch of the Dundee City fairtrade guide.
We can also provide outside catering and are about to launch our new 'rent a restaurant' idea,
the aim of which is to provide private functions in the evenings.
